Five of the Finest Menorca Beaches

Five of the Finest Menorca Beaches

By: Brenda Jaaback

Menorca is famed as one of the most relaxing holiday destinations in Europe. Less touristic than Mallorca or the Costas, it offers a traditional island culture, relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural attractions. There are numerous outstanding hotels, apartments and villas in Menorca and there’s plenty to see and do on the island, from the horse show in Cala Galdana to the panoramic sights from the summit of Mount Toro. But without a doubt the biggest attraction for a holiday in Menorca is going to be the beaches.

The island has more beaches than Ibiza and Mallorca put together, ranging from long, bustling beaches to peaceful little coves. Whether you want to enjoy fully developed beaches close to the hotels and villas of Menorca or secluded stretches of sand where you can swim and sunbathe in peace and quiet, you are sure to find a beach here that is perfect for your needs. Here are five of the very best beaches on the island…

Cala Pregonda

Perhaps the finest secluded beach on the island, this stunning bay features crystal clear water and is backed by tamarisk and pine woods. It is unspoilt, with a few nearby Menorca villas the only local buildings. It is hard to get to, a twenty minute walk from Binimella, but the effort is well worth it.

Punta Prima

Located in the far south east of the island, this beach is a long, attractive stretch of sand that is well populated with bars and restaurants. The strong currents mean that it is sometimes not safe for swimming, but the beautiful sand and stunning vistas more than make up for it. Parents should supervise their children at all times due to the strong waters.

Cala Santa Galdana

Cala Galdana is one of the best beaches on the island, combining plenty of facilities with a beautiful and unspoilt beach. This horseshoe bay is the most photographed beach on the island, and it is especially good for those on a family holiday in Menorca due to its safe shallow waters. But adults will delight in the natural beauty that surrounds Cala Galdana.

Son Bou

Son Bou is the longest beach in Menorca, a glorious 3 km piece of sand that has plenty of bars and watersports facilities to keep visitors entertained. It is big and usually packed solid, so it isn’t the place to go for privacy, but it is one of the finest large beaches on the island. Make sure you check the flags on the beach before you swim, as the currents can be strong.

Es Grau

Located close to Mahon, the capital of the island, Es Grau is one of the most naturally beautiful beaches on the island. The shallow waters in this horseshoe shaped bay are great for family bathing, and just behind the beach is the wetland park of Albufeira, a stunning national park filled with wildlife and fauna.

Whether you want to stay in a resort hotel or a secluded rural villa in Menorca, or are there for a family holiday or a romantic getaway, you are sure to find a nearby Menorca beach that is perfect for your needs!

Unforgettable Sights on Hawaii Holidays

Unforgettable Sights on Hawaii Holidays

Author: joe johnson

This tropical paradise conjures images of sun-drenched beaches where prompting travellers from across the globe to book their hotels in Hawaii. Although, it is very true that the beaches in Hawaii are amongst the best if not the best beaches across the world, it is also true that beyond beaches, the destination has many other claims to fame. Here are a few of the jewels adorning the crown of Hawaii.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The element of natural phantasmagoria associated with Hawaii holidays is perhaps best witnessed at the Hawaii National Volcanoes Park. Tourists flock to this place in hordes to watch the spectacle of the Kilauea volcano churning out lava towards the heavens. Many have even been able to see fresh molten lava crawling towards the sea. The park rangers here conduct guided tours of fantastic natural wonders like steam spewing craters, old lava trails, tropical rainforests, as well as hollowed out lava tubes. It is no exaggeration to say that the humbling sights of the Hawaii National Volcanoes Park are perhaps the biggest highlights of one's holidays to Hawaii.

Hanalei Bay Beach, Kauai

It is true that Hawaii is full of unforgettable beaches but the Hanalei Bay Beach, Kauai definitely steals the thunder from most if not all the other beaches. Almost every water sporting activity including kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, swimming, and boating is offered at the beach. The place also leaves nothing to be desired in terms of natural beauty. Sitting on the north shore of Kauai, this two mile long stretch of pristine white sand has foaming waterfalls and emerald mountains poking out of mists in the background. The east and west ends of the beach have the rivers Hanalei and Waipa as their boundaries respectively. The semi circular Hanalei Bay Beach is also lined with immense coral reefs on both ends of the bay. With so many charms, it is hardly surprising that this beach is the most popular place for thousands of beach enthusiasts during their Hawaii holidays. Quite a few of the numerous hotels in Hawaii are a convenient distance from beach as well.

USS Arizona Memorial

Going away on holidays to Hawaii also allow one to take a walk down memory lane to the spot where the history of the world altered its course. The place is none other than Pearl Harbour, where Japanese bombardment sunk the USS Arizona and over a thousand US sailors lost their lives leading to the atomic US reaction and the end of World War II. Today, parts of the wreckage are still visible and the heavy atmosphere of those yesteryears is almost spookily palpable.

Mt Haleakala

A spiralling drive to the summit of the Mt Haleakala transports one to a fairytale kind of landscape. Indescribable sights await one at a height of some 3055 metres. Floating banks of clouds seem to get sucked down by yawning volcanic craters. This is also the only place on earth where one can see the flourishing ten-year blooming Haleakala silversword. The summit of Mt Haleakala is also renowned for views of one of the best sunrises in the world.

Top Honeymoon Destinations

Top Honeymoon Destinations

Author: BillyDRitchie

So you have said your "I do's", suffered through the interminable reception, and finally ushered your guests out the door.  Now it's time for the fun part…the honeymoon.  The question of course is, where will you go to spend those first few days of married bliss?

Of course, I'm hoping you made that decision and those arrangements months earlier….and truth be told, there is no right or wrong way to do a honeymoon.  You basically go where you want and spend time there.  My own suggestion was to simply strike out on a road trip with no preplanned route or destination, but the wife didn't go for it and we ended up spending a wonderful week at Kiawah Island SC (which wasn't bad at all).

So where will you go?  Some of the more popular choices for honeymoon getaways are:

New York City.  The city that never sleeps.  The Big Apple.  You could spend months there and still never take in all that it has to offer.  From a stroll in Central Park, to a Broadway show, some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the world, as well as historical and scenic attractions such as the Empire State Building and Statue Of Liberty.  Be forewarned, however, if you are looking for a nice, quiet getaway, NYC may not be the best choice.

It's Better In The Bahamas.  No argument.  With quiet beaches surrounded by crystal clear water in an island setting sounds appealing, the Bahamas are the perfect spot.  You have 29 islands to choose from, with cave expeditions, wildlife, windsurfing, swimming, or just a relaxed moment in your hotel or bungalow.  The one drawback is that not all the islands are created equal, and some may provide a more peaceful, enjoyable experience than others.  It is also advised to skip the Bahamas during hurricane season, June through November.

Le France, Mon Cheri.   If you have the budget, a trip to France may be one of the most romantic and exciting getaways you can hope for.  With historic inns and landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, France is one of the perfect romantic destinations.  Unfortunately, the trip can get pricey fairly quickly, so make sure you have adequately budgeted for the excursion.

Florida.  Stay in the good old USA with a trip to Florida; the Sunshine State is replete with tourist attractions coast to coast, from the night life of Miami, to the theme parks in Orlando, to the white sand beaches of Pensacola.  It will be very easy to pack a week or twelve's worth of activities without ever doing the same thing twice.  Be advised, however, that spring brings hundreds of thousands of spring break partiers to Florida, and the summer months there can be extremely humid.

Las Vegas.  Often partnered with wedding ceremonies, Las Vegas is an ideal destination for no other reason than, well, it's Vegas.  From the casinos, to the shows, to the food, to the hotels, nothing in Las Vegas is ever done halfway.  If you are planning to elope, most hotels have their own wedding chapels.  One word of warning, gambling can get very addictive very quickly.  You are strongly advised to set a budget for game playing, how much you are willing to spend and how much you are willing to lose, and stick to it.  Don't let financial irresponsibility turn you into a permanent resident!

Bermuda.  A collection of 150 islands that are perfect for your honeymoon getaway, Bermuda offers isolated cottages on long stretches of white sand beaches, and located only about 2 hours by plane from the US East Coast.  There isn't much in the way of activities or nightlife, but if you are looking for a nice peaceful, largely non-commercial destination, Bermuda may be the perfect choice.

Hawaii.  Does this even need a reason?   Hawaii is probably the number one honeymoon spot, due no doubt to spectacular landscapes, thriving nightlife, and other tourist attraction such as Pearl Harbor or volcanoes such as Kilauea in the Volcanoes National Park.  The major drawback is the number of people who will have the same idea as you…tourists outnumber Hawaiians by 6 to 1, and Hawaiian natives by 30 to 1.

Of course your idea of the perfect honeymoon may include the Motel 6 down the street and all your meals at Dennys.  Whatever destination you agree on, congratulations and may you enjoy many years together.

Reality or fantasy? Legends of Verona

Reality or fantasy? Legends of Verona

Reality or fantasy? Legends of Verona by Lia Contesso

Spending some days in one of the hotels in the centre of Verona, is a perfect way to dive into its history and know its legends: some stories already made the tour of the world, like the one of Romeo and Juliet, and others that the people of the city gladly tell to the tourists, curious to get to know the city they are visiting.

Both in the centre and in the nearby periphery you can hear interesting stories: staying in a hotel in San Michele Extra, for example, you will be able to hear the story of the Montorio Castle, which is said to hide a book of command, while in the hotels in the centre of Verona you will hear stories about the arena and other historical places.

The books of command were said to be very common in the past times, but the story goes that they have been destroyed along the centuries by the priests, who burned them: the story goes that they were full of magic formulas, and possessing them you would have been able to command the elements, fly, find treasures...it would have been like getting some superpowers. One of the last book of command which have survived to the fires, then, would be in the surgeons of the castle; the surgeons, though, would also hide a passage which would bring to the arena in the city centre: the hidden passage would be some kilometres long, and its entrances are unknown as well as its constructor.

The legends of the city centre, of course, aim to the majestic arena, telling that it would have been built in only one night: the people of Verona, in fact, desired an arena in their city, and a man condemned to death, in his last night, receive a visit of the devil, who proposed to build an arena that night in change of his soul. This would have saved his life, and the man accepted: but as soon as he saw the demos working he repented, and spent the night praying Our Lady to save his soul. Some minutes before the dawn Our Lady, feeling a sincere repentance, satisfied the man’s prayer and made the bells ring the Angelus melody: the demos ran away at that sound, even though they still hadn’t finished their work. Hence, the arena remained incomplete, so that the devil could not have the soul of the man, but the work done was already enough to save his life.

Then, there’s the enormous rib hang from an arch in Piazza delle Erbe, and no one knows whose rib it is: maybe a pre-historical animal? Last only because everybody already knows the story, there’s the legend of Romeo and Juliet, which tells the story of the unlucky love of the young children of two rival families, who died for their love: the story gets confounded between history and legend, handing down stories and still showing the places in which the most renowned love story in the world would have happened.

Relax on a Turkish Blue Cruise

Relax on a Turkish Blue Cruise

By: Dan Williams

When most people think of cruise ships they imagine huge ocean going liners equipped with all kinds of luxuries where guests are treated to five star service as they are journeyed around the oceans, stopping over at busy resorts to disembark for sightseeing trips and excursions.

Cruising is still a very popular activity, particularly for older generations, who in some cases may have saved for many years before making their trip of a lifetime. Cruising along the southern coast of Turkey with one of the “Blue Cruise” companies is an altogether different proposition, but for the people who join one of these cruises, they are equally special as a holiday experience.

The south coast of Turkey is rapidly growing its profile as a major European holiday destination and, as well as the larger holiday resorts like Marmaris and Bodrum, there are many beautiful bays and coves that are still inaccessible by road. Travelling by sea brings all of these places within easy reach.

The boats used on the Blue Cruises are traditional Turkish craft known as Gulets. These are wooden built boats of varying sizes that are capable of taking between 6 and 20 guests at any one time. The boats have motors for use when required but can also travel under sail for the ultimate relaxing voyage. The Gulet is skippered by a captain who is helped by a crew of deckhands, chefs and other staff, who all work to ensure passengers have a perfect holiday. Although the boats are very comfortable inside this is not the typical luxury cruise provided the bigger cruise ships. What make these trips memorable are the peaceful and beautiful locations the ships are able to visit.

It is possible to charter a whole Gulet as a private party for exclusive use, but more commonly people charter a number of cabins and share the boat with other guests. Gulets are operated by private individuals as well as cruise operators who may run a fleet of boats.

It is still possible to charter very luxurious boats and one example is the Cobra Queen, a recently built Gulet providing 5 luxurious air conditioned cabin accommodation for up to 10 guests. The boat is operated by a dedicated crew of 5 and the level of luxury includes en suite bathrooms with massage showers and DVD/ TV and music systems.

The term Blue Cruise refers to the colour of the crystal clear waters in this part of the Eastern Mediterranean where spectacular bays and coves are around almost every headland. As well as anchoring up in remote secluded locations the Gulets also use the popular marinas at Antalya, Gocek, Mamaris, and Bodrum. Guests typically book flights to Turkey for arrival at an airport such as Bodrum or Dalaman before being picked up by the cruise company and transported to their boat.

A typical day on a Blue Cruise involves waking to warm sunshine and eating breakfast on deck followed by a couple of hours cruising to a new location. The Gulet will then moor or anchor for lunch and maybe a spot of swimming or just relaxing in the shade during the hottest part of the day. After packing up lunch another short cruise usually takes the boat to another secluded cove or perhaps a modern marina for a more cosmopolitan overnight stay. The bigger boats also carry a choice of watersports equipment to enjoy during the frequent stops. Windsurfers, ribs and jet skis are just some of the extras carried by larger Gulets.

The Turkish author Cevat Sakir is credited with originating the Blue Cruise concept after he was exiled to the region for inappropriate political stories. He decided to get to know the coastline by going out with local fishermen and writing about the places he had seen and the interesting history of the region. He would take visiting intellectuals on trips around the Gulf of Gokova which then became known as Blue Cruises. Sakir has been honoured with a monument based on a bronze bust of Sakir being erected in front of the castle in Bodrum.

Author Resource:->  Dan Williams has visited many resorts on the southern Turkish coast from Bodrum eastwards. Holiday destinations there are becoming more popular and operators like http://book.flythomascook.com are providing more flights to airports such as Antalya, Bodrum and Dalaman.

Enjoying the Natural Beauty of Chile

By: M Gravlee

Chile is considered to be among one of the better South American countries to visit. If ever anyone wanted to find and go to an interesting and fascinating South America location then this would have to be the one. With its world famous Andes volcanic mountains to its ancient forest tracts Chile represents a nature lover?s haven. This county captures many of nature?s best held treasures. The Torres del Paine is foremost of these places and is one of the many proofs towards the claims of fame for the country of Chile. The popular Lake District tends to hold most of the enchanting forest destinations that one can experience in this remote county.

Entry into the country of Chile is actually quite easy. If you happen to have a valid passport you can quickly ask for a tourist visa for immediate entry. The visa can be easily obtained provided you have complied with all the legal requirements for entry via the Chilean Embassy. Spanish is the primary language involved in this beautiful county thus it would be to your advantage to learn one or two of its more important words or phrases. Foreigners who can converse in the countries native language can always put a smile upon any of the local?s faces as well as a sparkle in their eyes.

While visiting in the country of Chile you can always rest assured that you can readily find a very good and reasonably priced place to stay for the trip. The business hub of the capital city begins its operation at about 8 AM in the morning and close for a lunch break at noon. Some shops and businesses will then reopen at about 3 PM or 4 PM and will eventually end its day at around 8 or 9 PM in the evening. Finding a nice place to sit down and enjoy an evening meal with an abundance of fine dining is always an easy task in Chile as tasty food is considered a valuable asset. A 10 percent tip is usually required in all the popular restaurants within the country.
